The current State of MMOs and Me

June 10th, 2009

I’ve been playing MMOs for about 7 years.  Over that period of time What I’ve wanted out of MMOs has shifted.  In the beginning I wasn’t very picky, I just wanted to play a decent game with other people.  As time passed I was more interested in a solid storyline.  However once you’ve been playing for a while, the storyline while solid is repetitive.  That lead me to start looking into PvP a little more seriously than I had in the past.

I went to Guild Wars  for GvG.  It was fun while it lasted, but leading a team of GvG players doesn’t leave a lot of time to relax and actually enjoy the game.  I left Guild Wars for WoW.

WoW is interesting to me, in that the PvP isn’t very good…but it had me stick around for a while.  Then Warhammer entered Beta.  I tested, and decided it was pretty good.  Ordered my copy and played for a few months…however it wasn’t that easy to find a decent group of people to play with.

I went back to WoW for a while…tried the Arena Tournament…and it was all right, but just not quit the PvP I was looking for.  I think what I really want is the PvE of WoW and the PvP of Guild Wars.

In the meantime I’ve tried a number of betas AION included, and I just haven’t found anything that is really what I’m looking for.  With that in mind, I’ve spent some time over the last few days, setting up a nice Single PC Multi-Box setup for WoW.  I’m now working on leveling 5 toons at once, and learning about multi-boxing.  Once that’s done, I may give it a try with Warhammer…of course if I do that, it might have to be 6 accounts instead of 5.

Only time will tell, but I’m at least having fun doing what i’m doing.

AION – First Thoughts

June 5th, 2009

Well, considering this is a PvP blog, I’m not sure how this will work…but hear me out.

The First beta weekend for AION started today, and it’s running pretty smoothly all things considered.  There was very little lag.  There was no problems logging in, and there were a lot of people online while i was there.

However, since we are only allowed to create one race of people right now, there really isn’t any PvP…unless you count dueling…which I don’t.

Overall the game looks good.  It runs pretty good.  Everything is pretty smooth.  There is still some work that needs to be done, but since the beta is running version 1.0 of the client, and 1.2 is already out and running in China…I know things will improve.

I’m hoping for a few changes to the UI setup…things like addons, and the ability to move/resize all elements of the UI.  I think it’s obvious that I love messing with the UI, so I’m hoping that’s put in as well.

The wife and I got to level 7, which isn’t too bad considering we have 3 sick kids, and we only played for maybe 4 hours total.

In other news, it looks like she’s getting into the #1 raiding guild on her server, so that’s pretty sweet for her.

That’s all for now, I plan on having a better write-up on the beta for Sunday Night / Monday morning.

Aion Beta

June 4th, 2009

Aion beta starts this weekend.  I’ll be checking it out.  If you get some time, you should head over to Game Stop and pick up a copy of the pre-order, which includes a key to allow you to play in all of the beta weekend events.

Huxley

June 4th, 2009

I got into the File planet Huxley beta yesterday.  I gave it a try…it felt too much like an updated version of Gunz.  Wasn’t enough for me to really get into it.

However, since then I have purchased my pre-order copy of Aion, which includes beta weekend events…this weekend should be a good time to test.

Looking forward to it, especially since I found out my boys from SI are going to be partaking in the Aion Beta.

30 = Tier 4 :)

May 21st, 2009

I finally made it to level 30, which means Tier 4…w00t.  Great night of keep takes last night, we defended 2, took back the 2 order stole, and then defended a third…was a good night for ORvR in general.  On top of that, I finally got 30.  Time to move into tier 4 and heal keep defense.  :)

City of Villains, Guild Wars, and Warhammer…Oh My!

May 20th, 2009

Chris and I met this great guild.  We were leveling with this great guild in Warhammer.  They decided to play CoV, so I re-activated my account.  Within a day or two, I remembered why I had canceled my account.  The PvE is very repetitive, and the PvP is non-existent.

Last night Chris mentioned Guild wars to them.  I always enjoyed Guild wars, I just got burned out leading a competitive GvG guild.  It has some really nicely structured PvP, and it has no monthly fee.  I took some time last night to setup my UI so I would be happy with it.

I’m still leveling within Warhammer, because I truly enjoy that game, but it’s a lot slower leveling a healer with no team now.  Anyways, only time will tell which game we really start pushing together in, so we can succeed at PvP.

Warhammer Online – Single Profile

May 14th, 2009

In a recent change, Warhammer Online now allows you to set your toons to use a specific profile.  This is both a good and bad thing.  The good – Easy to share profiles, and descriptive names.  The bad – no built in way to share profiles.  In order to pass along the information, I’ve decided I would go ahead and write up a quick ‘howto’ on sharing a single profile among many characters.

This process is in no way supported by Mythic.  It should also be noted that you should have some rudimentary skills if you’re going to do this, which is probably true since you’re messing with your UI.  :)

Replace bold words with the appropriate words.

  1. If you are running windows xp download the Windows Server 2003 Resource kit, and install it.
  2. Open a command prompt and change to your Warhammer online directory.
  3. Change to your user directory
  4. create a profile name (ie dps, heals, etc…)
  5. change to your settingsservernamecharacter’s directory
  6. For vista ‘mklink /j ……ProfileName’ and press enter.  For Windows xp replace mklink /j with linkd ‘linkd ……ProfileName’ and press enter.
  7. This will create a new profile in that toons directory that you can activate in game.  Repeat this process as necessary.
  8. Set the profile up in game.
  9. Now you have a shared profile, or multiple shared profiles.

Hope this helps.

My UI

May 13th, 2009

Ok, based on some feedback, and some thinking, I believe I’ve finalized my UI.  At least until some different RvR add ons are released, and i can change how my zone tracking is working.

I’ve included pictures of my DPS and Healer setups, since there are slight variations between the two.

On the healer, I always include the Defensive and offensive target, but while on DPS I only include the offensive target.

I also use two different themes for Squared.  While on DPS I keep up a group of bars for my WB/SC unit frames, but I use the Squares while I’m healing…it draws my eye more quickly to someone that might need a heal.

Anyone that has a career bar, gets the PURE Career bar addon.  I’ve also hidden my morale bar, and just use Morale Hotbar to put the skills on my hot bar.

Pictures and add on links are below.  Tell me what you think.  :)

Updated 05/14/2009 : Added two new addons, and made some minor tweaks to the UI.

New Forum – Sadistic Intentions

May 2nd, 2009

Since the guild didn’t have a web site, we went ahead and setup some forums for them at http://www.pvp-pro.com/si

Welcome to the PvP-Pro family.

Sadistic Intentions?

May 2nd, 2009

We ran across an interesting guild name while playing…what could be more evil than ‘Sadistic Intentions’?  So we joined…and haven’t looked back since.  It’s been a great time, we’ve met some great people, we’ve been leveling like crazy, and overall having a great time.

Glad we met these guys, joined the guild, and have been playing with them.
